Icom On The Trail

After putting their hands up to support the 2014 Oxfam Trailwalker to be The Official Radio Communications Sponsor, Icom New Zealand is proud to announce their continued support for the second year running. Oxfam Trailwalker is the largest single charity event in New Zealand and raises funds towards their work with communities across the Pacific. On 28th – 29th March 2015 Oxfam Trailwalker will be celebrating their 10th anniversary of this incredible event with hundreds of teams of four taking on the challenge of completing 100km in 36 hours with over a thousand support crew and volunteers.

To achieve the longevity of this event in terms of attracting both new and repeat participation Oxfam have had to continually adapt and tweak the trail to include more varied and challenging terrain. This in turn however has meant that over the past few years they have struggled to communicate effectively across wide areas of the course due to the increasingly undulating and challenging geography. It is important for teams to be able to communicate with their support crew to update their location on the trail. Support crews can then prepare for their team’s arrival and make sure they are readily stocked for their team’s arrival. Reliable communications is also vital for volunteers and organisers in case of accidents or emergencies.

Mobile phones can’t be relied upon as reception varies over the trail and the previous analogue radio system wasn’t dependable and cut out in rough terrain. Icom was able to provide a digital radio solution that managed to cover areas where Oxfam had never been able to communicate from before. Icom supplied a complete communications solution for Oxfam Trailwalker and even stayed over the weekend to provide on call service and support for their radios. Oxfam New Zealand’s Engagement & Marketing Director Gwen Green says “The whole event could not have run as smoothly as it did without Icom’s support. Icom certainly went above and beyond our expectations.”
